Microcrystalline Hydroxyapatite Complex (MCHC): MCHC has numerous advantages over other forms of calcium making it the best choice to supplement calcium. It not only prevents further loss of bone but restores its mineral content. It is well tolerated, safe and non toxic. In Dogs, chronic toxicity of MCHC was assessed using dose level of 5 g/ Kg/ Day over a three month period. No hematological or biochemical changes suggesting toxicity were reported. There was no effect on hepatic or renal function and post-mortem studies revealed neither microscopic nor macroscopic evidence of toxicity.
Unlike calcium carbonate it does not produce carbon dioxide and interfere with digestion. MCHC is more bio-available than any other form of calcium 53-70%of the calcium administered is absorbed in the gastro intestinal tract as it occurs as hexagonal needles arranged as rosettes. X-ray diffraction studies proved that the only crystalline material present was hydroxyapatite. The presence of phosphorus, collagens and trace amounts of fluoride, magnesium and other elements in an organic matrix contributes to its efficacy. Its low sodium content makes it more valuable.
